Census 1872

The more interesting statistics from the 1872 census are shown in the Tables that follow. As in future censi the main figures do not include members of the garrison.
The total civilian population was 19,289, which is the total of all those recorded in Tables 1 and 2, although the Tables themselves were based on different criteria.
Fortunately statistics for 1872 are also available for the garrison. The next Table shows the numbers for the two battalions in the garrison on the date of the census. The establishment for a battalion of the Indian Army was for 8 officers. Either the eighth British officer or an Indian officer would have been commanding the detachment on Perim.
Details for other units in the garrison, in particular for the Artillery, will be added if they become available.
