NON-VISIT OF THE KING OF THE BELGIANS 1927

King Albert I (1875–1934)

Towards the end of August 1927 Aden was informed that King and Queen of the Belgians would be on board the SS Rampura when she called at Aden around 6 September. Apart from a 31 gun salute there was to be no ceremonial.

The King was on a private visit to India, and Aden was to avoid laying on any social function, although if he came ashore the Resident, John Henry Keith Stewart, could invite him for a meal at the Residency. At the last minute the Government of India ordered that no salute was to be fired as the Rampura was due at Aden on a Sunday.

However the Resident was to go on board in uniform to welcome the King to Aden. On his return from India the King travelled via Ceylon, from where the royal party sailed on a Japanese ship, the Suwa Maru, which did not call at Aden.
